The Who, What, When, Where, Why & HOW Of Doing Videos For Your Home Service Business
Each second of video you watch is made up of 30 individual pictures. So, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is millions of words telling people everything you want them to know about you.
This content is extremely valuable! You have to make sure that you’re doing video often and doing it right.
Here’s everything you need to know to get started making video.

Who Does The Video?
Everyone on your team can needs to shoot video. As people, we’ve grown accustomed to an incredible amount of access to celebrities, athletes, politicians, and anyone else we want to know more about.
Whether they realize it or not, your customers have come to expect the same transparency from you.
This isn’t to say that you have to hit social media with pictures of your burgers every time you open your grill. People will, though, expect to be able to see who your company is and what kind of work you do. From office personnel to the techs in the field, make sure your team is showing who you are.
What Do I Shoot?
Here are 5 simple, engaging video ideas. If you aren’t already making these, you should be.
• Before and After Transformations: Showcase the impact of your services with before and after shots. This visual representation demonstrates your capability and builds trust. Even if a customer isn’t ready for service right now, you will strengthen the connection by showcasing good work.
• Tutorial Videos: It’s great to share how-to videos related to your services. They offer valuable information that can help customers understand more about your industry. As an added bonus, they can also show people that these jobs are not as easy as they seem and that a trained professional is always the best way to go.
• Time-Lapse Videos: You can use time-lapse to condense a long project into a few seconds – and the function is already on your phone. This is particularly effective for showing the progression of a task from start to finish.
• Highlight Employee Expertise: Feature short clips of your staff explaining what they do, sharing quick tips, or discussing what they enjoy about their work. This showcases your team’s expertise and adds a personal touch that helps build your relationship.
• Seasonal Promotions and Tips: Content works best when people feel like it’s current. Share specific services, promotions, or home care tips relevant to the time of year to help drive bookings.
Where Do I Make My Video?
Everywhere you are!
You don’t need a special studio or a specific team member to make videos. Remember, this is about giving customers the feeling that they know what you will do for them. The best way to do that is to show them what you’re doing right now.
How Do I Make A Reasonable Video?
None of the examples listed above require significant editing. Simple videos are effective videos in this space. Here are a few more things to keep in mind when shooting video for your home service business.
THE BASICS:
- Shaky videos are distracting. They make your content look amateur. Use tripods to stabilize the camera whenever possible. Tripods that hold your phone are affordable and readily available.
- Ensure videos are well-lit. Use natural light whenever possible, ideally with the sun facing whatever you’re shooting. If indoors, consider an affordable ring light to enhance visibility and quality. If a sneaker influencer can afford one, can your business afford to go without one?
- You need clear, quality audio. If your video is too quiet or windy sounding, people will not sit through your important content. If you are not right next to your phone, use an external microphone instead of the built-in camera microphone.
- Keep social media videos concise. Between 60-90 seconds is often ideal for engagement, unless a detailed explanation is necessary.
- The main subject needs to be in sharp focus. Most phones can do this for you, just double-check before you post your video. If the phone got confused, you might have to shoot again.
- Higher-resolution videos look more professional and are more engaging to viewers. Shoot in at least 1080p resolution if at all possible.
PRO TIPS
- If you do know how to do basic editing, include supplementary footage (also known as B-roll) to cut away to during edits. This can make videos more interesting and dynamic, especially when explaining complex topics.
- Choose a background that won’t distract your viewers.
- Use graphics and text overlays sparingly to highlight key points.
- Teach your techs basic SEO for videos. For example, using relevant keywords in the video title, description, and tags to improve visibility on platforms like YouTube or when shared on social media.
Why Am I Making These Videos?
Video is a way to introduce yourself to a countless number of people at all times of the day or night. Make sure your personality comes through in everything you shoot.
If your brand is fun, add a touch of humor to your videos to keep them light-hearted and enjoyable. If you get excited about the technical aspects of your job or innovation in your industry, showcase that.
Naturally, you don’t want a viewer to get bogged down in any aspect of your personality, but capturing who you really are makes your content more memorable.
